Badminton Calgary is a non-profit organization that actively promotes the sport of badminton in Calgary and surrounding areas.
History
The Calgary & District Badminton Association was organized during the 1970's. It's main object was to encourage players in the smaller clubs in Calgary and the surrounding areas to have access to tournaments and inter-participants from Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Fernie, Edmonton and points in-between. We had initially a couple of very successful interclub seasons which included trophies for the winners and a wind-up barbecue. Lack of interest in the following seasons resulted in the demise of the interclub program.
An attempt was made in 1979 to incorporate the organization but was never finalized.
During the 1980's the number of clubs playing in schools and other halls declined and the participation in the organization dropped. A very successful summer evening program was held for 2 years during this time but the facility became no longer available so this avenue to summer badminton came to a halt. A few dedicated individuals attempted to keep the organization going but decided to put it on hold.
In 1980 we took over a junior program when there was lack of attention from the organizing coaches. We provided funding assistance when it was needed. The program has been expanded to several locations. It provides paid coaches and has been self-sustaining for several years.
In 1990 Badminton Alberta aimed to have local associations cover each of the 8 provincial zones and a group of individuals were recruited to revive the CDBA. A serious effort was made for incorporation in order for the association to participate in legally authorized fund-raising events (casino's, raffles, bingo's, etc.). On September 14, 1992, our constitution was ratified under the name Badminton Calgary. A number of casino's have been held which provided funds for specified projects.
